Children of all ages were invited to play Opera Games in the historic Aud on Main Street this past Saturday. An enthusiastic crowd was entertained by the wonderful young singers of Opera in the Ozarks as they explained the rich and colorful world of Grand Opera, singing (in English) some of opera’s best-known and beloved arias, duets and trios. In between songs, the cast wove a clever tale of playing the Opera Game, in which operatic characters such as Carmen, Violeta, Papageno, Papagena and others introduced themselves to each other and to the audience. As they talked about their characters and the operas they were in, we began to learn something of the rich history of this wonderful art form, what the different voice ranges were called, some of the story lines and how much fun it was to take part. The children in the audience appeared rapt throughout the nearly hour-long performance. At the end, the kids were invited on stage to pose for pictures with their favorite opera characters.
Hats off to Opera in the Ozarks for staging this wonderful introduction to the the grand world of Grand Opera! The young performers charmed this somewhat older opera fan!
